Obtaining an OEUK medical: what to expect

Open Navigation

In the demanding and high-risk environment of the offshore energy industry, ensuring the health and safety of personnel is paramount. OEUK (Oil & Gas UK) medicals play a crucial role in this process, verifying that individuals are physically and medically capable of performing their duties safely.

At Express Offshore Medicals North East, we provide comprehensive and efficient OEUK medical assessments, supporting the safety and wellbeing of offshore workers.

Who needs an OEUK medical?

OEUK medicals are essential for anyone working in the offshore energy sector, including:

Why are OEUK medicals important?

Offshore energy work is inherently challenging and carries significant risks. The nature of these roles demands physical exertion, including heavy lifting, strenuous activity and prolonged periods of standing or working in awkward positions.

There are also several environmental hazards, including harsh weather, high winds and rough seas.

An in-depth medical assessment is important so that in the case of an accident or emergency, individuals are physically and mentally prepared to respond effectively.

Many tasks are safety critical, where any lapse in physical or mental ability can have serious consequences.

OEUK medicals mitigate these risks by identifying potential health issues before they become a safety concern, ensuring that only those who are physically and medically fit are allowed to work in these environments.

What is involved?

A comprehensive OEUK medical conducted by an Express Offshore Medicals North East professional typically includes:

General health review

A discussion with the medical professional about your medical history, including any current or previous conditions, ongoing treatments, medications, or procedures.

Questions about your lifestyle habits, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, diet, and exercise levels, are asked to determine their potential impact on your fitness for work or training.

Musculoskeletal assessment

A physical examination of your joints, muscles, flexibility, and posture to ensure that you can safely perform the physical demands of your job without risk of injury.

Drug and alcohol screening (if required)

Some workplaces or training programmes may require testing to ensure compliance with drug and alcohol policies, ensuring you can complete tasks safely and responsibly.

Job-specific tests

Depending on the nature of your work, additional assessments may be required. These could include fitness tests for working at heights, endurance evaluations for physically demanding jobs, or confined space testing for specialised roles in hazardous environments.

How often is an OEUK assessment required?

An OEUK medical certificate is typically valid for two years. However, the frequency of required medical examinations can vary depending on individual employer requirements. Therefore, while a two-year renewal is standard, it’s crucial to confirm specific renewal timelines with your employer to ensure compliance.

Employers may also request medical reassessments following a significant health event, such as an injury, surgery, or the diagnosis of a chronic condition, to ensure that the employee can safely continue working or training.

How soon after the medical are certificates issued?

The time it takes to receive a certificate can vary depending on the provider, but in most cases, certificates are issued shortly after the assessment is completed.

If no complications or additional tests are required, many providers will issue certificates the same day, either right after the appointment or within a few hours. Some clinics may send you a digital copy or a physical certificate before you leave.

However, if additional documentation, specialist consultations, or follow-up tests are required, the process may take longer, usually a few days. In such cases, the provider will notify you of any delays and explain the next steps.

It’s a good idea to confirm the expected timeline with your chosen provider when booking the appointment, especially if you need the certificate urgently for work or training purposes.
