MSA motorsport medical: everything you need to know

Open Navigation

Motorsport is one of the most exhilarating and physically demanding disciplines in the sporting world.

Whether you’re tearing down a rally stage, navigating a tight karting circuit or going head-to-head on a racecourse, the adrenaline, speed and split-second decision-making are unlike anything else.

However, with the thrill comes risk. This is why MSA motorsport medicals are required for anyone competing in the sport professionally.

In this blog post, we’ll discuss what an MSA motorsport medical is, who requires one, the medical examination process, how to prepare and how we can help.

What is the MSA motorsport medical?

The MSA motorsport medical is a vital health assessment required by Motorsport UK, the governing body for motorsport in the country, for anyone applying for or renewing a competition licence.

The primary purpose of the MSA motorsport medical is to verify that drivers and competitors are physically and medically fit to participate safely in these events.

The examination helps identify any health conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, vision impairments, diabetes or neurological disorders, as these may impair a driver’s ability to control a vehicle at high speeds or under high pressure.

This reduces the likelihood of accidents caused by medical issues while racing.

Who needs an MSA motorsport medical?

Everyone participating in professional motorsports requires an MSA medical.

The type of MSA medical required will differ depending on whether you are a new driver, renewing your licence, your age and the type of competition licence you are applying for.

Here’s an overview of who requires what and when.

First-time drivers

If you’re applying for a Motorsport UK competition licence for the first time, you’ll need to complete a medical assessment with a professional.

Once completed, the medical report is valid for 12 months from the date of the examination.

Current licence holders

If you already have a Motorsport UK licence, you will only need to renew your medical when it expires (after 12 months) or if you are upgrading to a higher licence level that requires additional checks.

For example, if you’re progressing from a National to an International licence, you may need a more detailed medical assessment, including an electrocardiogram (ECG).

This is because each level of competition increases the physical and mental demands, and Motorsport UK wants drivers to be medically prepared for the challenge.

Drivers aged 45+

When you reach 45, a stress-related ECG becomes mandatory.

This test must be performed using either the Bruce Protocol treadmill test or the Ergometric Bicycle test. The resulting report is usually valid for between 12-24 months depending on other personal factors.

This reflects the increased likelihood of age-related health issues that may impair concentration, reaction time or physical endurance.

Even if you feel perfectly healthy, this test can detect any silent problems, such as high blood pressure or early-stage cardiovascular issues.

The medical examination process: what to expect

If you’ve never had an MSA motorsport medical before, you may be wondering what exactly the examination involves.

Here’s a step-by-step overview of what to expect at your appointment.

Step 1: Medical history review

The medical begins with a detailed discussion about your health background. You’ll be asked about:

This is an important step that allows the doctor to assess any risk factors.

Be honest and thorough; hiding medical conditions may not only invalidate your licence but may also jeopardise your and others’ safety on the track.

If you have a condition like asthma or diabetes, you may be asked to provide supporting documentation from your doctor or specialist.

Step 2: Vision testing

Good eyesight is essential for motorsport, where quick reactions and sharp visual awareness can be the difference between winning and a near miss.

You’ll be tested for both:

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you must bring them to the assessment.

The test also includes colour vision screening, which is particularly important for recognising safety flags and trackside lights.

Colour blindness doesn’t automatically disqualify you; however, it might require additional testing or restrictions.

Step 3: Cardiovascular health: ECG and blood pressure

Your cardiovascular system is put under pressure during races, so testing heart health is an important aspect of the MSA medical.

As already mentioned in the blog post, an ECG (electrocardiogram) may be required depending on your age or the licence category you are applying for.

In addition, your blood pressure will be checked to ensure that it is within normal limits.

This step provides critical information about your ability to perform in racing conditions, where adrenaline and high heart rates are common.

Step 4: General physical health assessment

The examiner will conduct a comprehensive health check to evaluate your physical condition. This may include:

The goal is to ensure that you have the mobility, strength, and physical resilience to meet the demands of motorsport, particularly during long stints or high-G-force situations.

Step 5: Hearing test

While Motorsport UK does not currently require a formal hearing test as part of its medical standards, we do include it as an additional safety precaution that many medical providers, including ourselves, offer.

A basic hearing test detects any potential hearing impairments that may impair your ability to respond to audio cues such as engine sounds, marshal instructions or emergency signals while on track.

It’s a quick and simple test, but we believe it helps improve overall driver safety and awareness.

Step 6: Documentation and submission

Following the appointment, the examiner will complete your Motorsport UK medical form.

This form must be brought with you to the appointment and can be downloaded here

The examiner will sign, stamp and date the form to confirm that you meet the medical requirements for competition.

If approved, you keep a copy and submit the original with your licence application or renewal. If a follow-up is required, the examiner will advise your next steps, whether that’s a specialist report or additional testing.

Preparing for your MSA medical

Coming prepared can help make your MSA motorsport medical experience as stress-free as possible.

Here are a few simple steps you can take to ensure that your appointment runs smoothly and that you pass your assessment without delay.

Bring the right documents and ID

Before your appointment, ensure that you bring:

Wear suitable clothing

Some of the medical will include basic physical checks and possibly an ECG, which will require access to your chest.

Keep your health in mind as you prepare for the medical

Although it is not a fitness test, there are a few wellness tips that can help you pass without any unnecessary issues:

Common questions and misconceptions

When it comes to MSA Motorsport Medicals, there is often a lot of confusion, especially for first-time applicants.

To help clear things up, here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions, as well as a few common myths we all hear.

Can I get my MSA medical done by my GP?

Technically, yes, but it is not always the best choice.

Many GPs are unfamiliar with Motorsport UK’s medical standards and paperwork, which can lead to delays, errors, or the need for repeat appointments.

That is why many competitors prefer a specialist clinic, such as ourselves, where the team understands exactly what is required and can complete the process efficiently.

What happens if I don’t pass?

Not passing your medical does not always mean that you are permanently unable to race.

In many cases, it may only be a temporary problem, such as elevated blood pressure, which can be tested again.

If a medical condition is identified, you may be required to provide additional documentation or undergo treatment before reapplying.

Do I need to be physically fit to pass?

No, this isn’t a fitness test or a physical endurance challenge.

You do not need to be a professional athlete, but you must meet basic medical standards for vision, cardiovascular health and general well-being.

What if I wear glasses or have a health condition?

Wearing glasses or managing a medical condition does not automatically disqualify you.

You can usually be cleared as long as your condition is under control and does not pose a safety risk.

Can I be disqualified for using medication?

Not necessarily. Being on prescribed medication does not automatically make you unfit to compete.

What matters is whether the condition being treated, and the medication itself could impact your ability to drive safely.

Always bring a list of medications with you and be open and honest during your medical appointment. The assessing doctor will take a balanced approach.
