GWO (RUK) Medical
This generally covers the wind industry, a fast-growing sector that involves working both onshore and offshore. There are two main types of medicals for this industry, both last for a maximum of two years. The Renewable UK (RUK)/GWO medical is required for near-shore and land-based work in the wind industry.
This medical has parallels with the OEUK examination and includes a Chester step test. This involves stepping on and off a step of a certain size and having your heart rate monitored until a certain point and then a result is calculated.
Offshore work on wind turbines can be much further out to sea, and in this case, an OEUK examination with a Chester step test would be recommended. If you are unsure which medical would be required for your work, please either ask your employer or discuss it with us.

About the medical
Please bring photographic ID (passport or driving license) and any medication including inhalers, drops, creams, injections and tablets. Please also bring any glasses and be prepared to remove contact lenses. Bring exercise clothes for the Chester step test. The GWO (RUK) medical lasts between 45 minutes to an hour and will involve:
- Social, occupational and medical history
- Height/weight/BMI/waist circumference
- Blood pressure test
- Eye test
- Urine test
- Hearing test
- Clinical examination
Further information may be required depending on your medical history. If there is any history of stroke, heart attack, an issue with heart rhythm, blood clots, kidney stones, epilepsy, diabetes or allergies, please speak to the doctor before the medical so you can gather the correct information for the medical to ensure there are no delays on receiving your certificate if passed.
